Midsummer Challenge Press Release
The Edge of Wales Walk is pleased to announce that it has established the Midsummer Challenge as an annual walking event.
The midsummer challenge is to complete the 47 mile Llŷn coastal footpath known as the Edge of Wales Walk within 24 hours on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer. The purpose of this challenge is to attract hundreds of walkers to Llŷn to attempt this walk and be sponsored to raise a lot of money for the Wales Air Ambulance.
A successful pilot event was held this year when 9 pioneer walkers attempted to meet the challenge. Walking started at 3:30 am against a background of a fabulous sunrise over Snowdonia and continued through rain and eventually sunshine until 7:30 pm when the walkers reached Aberdaron. Throughout the day the walkers were backed up by the Edge of Wales Walk minibus and copious quantities of food and drink. The walkers who achieved this feat were very fit indeed but it is envisaged that next year less athletic walkers will attempt the feat as a relay. This was an idea conceived by LDWA member Gillian Walker and we would also like to thank David Hill of Loughborough University for his invaluable help in organising the day.
