A 7 Day Walking Break along the Edge of Wales Walk at the Woodlands Hall Hotel

Day 1 Arrive at the Woodlands Hall Hotel in Nefyn. This is a pleasant three star hotel surrounded by trees with en suite rooms, www.woodlandshall.co.uk  Evening meals are served in the restaurant. If you arrive in good time then there is the option of walking up to the hill-fort Carn Fadryn, which has panoramic views of the entire peninsula -some 4 miles away. See www.pixaerial.com to look at the quality of the walking country.

Day 2 After breakfast we will meet you and ask you to follow us in your own car to the end point of the day’s walk in Llithfaen. We will then take you on in our minibus to the start of the walk at Clynnog Fawr. Clynnog was the traditional assembly point for pilgrims making the journey to Bardsey Island, and contains a fine church, chapel and holy well dedicated to St Beuno. You can then set out on the first section of the walk over the high moors at Bwlch Mawr, which will lead you to the Rivals Inn at Llanaelhaearn for lunch. Then walk up the other side of the valley to make an interesting ascent of the Iron Age Hill Fort Tre’r Ceiri, before returning to your car. 12 miles.

Day 3 We will drive you back to Llithfaen from where you will take the pass through a conifer forest to Nant Gwrtheyrn Heritage Centre www.nantgwrtheyrn.org. This former quarrying village is now the picturesque location of a Welsh Language School. From here follow the coast path through a forest of stunted oak trees to the tiny pilgrim’s church at Pistyll, which is often strewn with wildflowers near to religious festivals. You will then head on to the neighbouring towns of Nefyn and Morfa Nefyn where you can stop for lunch, a good location for this might be the Tŷ Coch inn on the sands at Porth Dinllaen www.tycoch.co.uk. From here continue on to Edern and the hotel. Distance 12 miles.

Day 4 Today will be a short day to help you recover from the previous two days. Set off west from the hotel along the coast path. Once you reach Porth Towyn make a detour inland to Tudweiliog where you can have lunch at the Lion Hotel before catching the bus back to Edern. Distance 6 miles.

Day 5 After breakfast drive in your own car to Porth Oer and park at the National Trust car park. We will pick you up from here and drive you back to Porth Towyn from where you will follow the coast path back to your car. This section is classic coastal walking with rocky cliff tops interspersed with sandy coves. 11 miles.

Day 6 Drive back down the peninsula to Porth Oer from where you will follow the coastal path all the way around the headland to Aberdaron itself www.aberdaronlink.co.uk  This section provides spectacular views from the hills at the tip of the peninsula, both south-west to Bardsey Island and north-east along almost the entire length of the route. It’s a great opportunity to see just how far you’ve come! Once you reach Aberdaron, pop in for a well deserved cup of tea at our offices before we drive you back to your car. 9 miles or less if you wish.

Day 7 Return in your car to Porth Meudwy not far from Aberdaron. Here you can park before taking the Enlli ferry across to Bardsey Island www.bardsey.org. This is a beautiful place, full of wildlife and steeped in history. Visitors have three hours to explore before returning to the mainland. The cost of the return trip is £25 per head payable to the Bardsey Island Trust, a charity that works to preserve this unique location. You will return circa 3:00pm and can then return to your hotel.   Day 8 Check out and drive home via the delights of Snowdonia.

The price for this holiday in 2010, including dinner, bed & breakfast accommodation, minibus transport, use of the maps, special guide book and GPS, and care and attention throughout will be £58 per person per night sharing a twin or double room with a £7 single supplement. This will be invoiced by the Edge of Wales Walk from whom you may also purchase packed lunches (£4) or from pubs en route or you can buy food in the Edern shop. The itinerary and all the distances can easily be adapted for a longer or shorter holiday. We have simply illustrated how it is possible, pleasurable and cost effective to tackle a linear long distance trail and stay in one good hotel as a base.
